We have built over 200 products at Goodspeed, and a significant portion of our recent work ships on Framer. We use it for marketing sites, landing pages, and content-driven websites for startups and scale-ups.

This is not a surface-level overview. This review comes from daily, production use across dozens of client projects. We will cover what Framer does well, where it falls short, who should use it, and who should not.

TL;DR: Our Verdict

  • Framer is best for: marketing websites, landing pages, portfolio sites, and content sites where design quality and speed-to-launch matter more than deep CMS functionality

  • Framer is not ideal for: complex e-commerce, large-scale web applications, or sites that need hundreds of CMS collections and advanced database relationships

  • Pricing is fair for what you get, starting at $10/month on the Basic plan. The Pro plan at $30/month covers most agency and startup needs. Watch out for editor seat costs on larger teams.

  • Design quality is Framer's biggest advantage. No other website builder gives you this level of visual control without writing code.

  • CMS and SEO have improved significantly in 2025 and 2026, but still lag behind WordPress for content-heavy sites

  • At Goodspeed, we build production Framer websites for startups and scale-ups. Book a free consultation or try Goodwin, our AI scoping tool, for a free project estimate.

What Is Framer in 2026?

Framer is no longer a prototyping tool. It is a full website builder that lets you design, build, and publish production websites without writing code. Companies like Miro, Perplexity AI, and Scale AI use it for their primary web presence.

In August 2025, Framer raised $100M in a Series D round at a $2B valuation, led by Meritech Capital with participation from Atomico and Accel. The company reached $50M in annual recurring revenue and 500,000 monthly active users. It is now targeting $100M ARR in 2026.

The platform combines a Figma-like visual editor with a built-in CMS, hosting on a global edge CDN, and AI-powered features for layout generation, content writing, and localization. You design in the browser and publish with one click.

If you are brand new to the platform, our Framer basics guide covers the fundamentals before you dive into evaluating it.

Framer Pricing in 2026

Framer restructured its pricing in late 2025, simplifying from five tiers to a cleaner structure. Here is what each plan costs when billed annually:

Plan

Monthly (Annual Billing)

Best For

Free

$0

Exploring the platform, non-commercial projects

Basic

$10/month

Personal sites, portfolios, freelancer pages

Pro

$30/month

Teams, agencies, startups with growing sites

Scale

$100/month

Companies running full marketing stacks on Framer

Enterprise

Custom

Organizations needing SSO, custom hosting, dedicated support

Monthly billing costs more. Basic jumps to $15/month and Pro to $45/month if you pay month-to-month. Scale is only available on annual billing.

The pricing you see on the plan page is not always the full cost. Editor seats are billed separately. Basic includes 2 editors, Pro and Scale include 10. Additional editors cost $20/month on Basic and $40/month on Pro and Scale. If you are an agency adding client editors, this adds up. A Pro site with three extra editors costs $150/month, not $30.

What Framer Does Well

Design Quality and Visual Control

This is where Framer stands apart from every other website builder. The editor works like Figma. You have full control over layout, spacing, typography, animations, and interactions without touching code. Every element is customizable down to the pixel.

The result is that Framer sites consistently look better than sites built on Webflow, WordPress, or Squarespace at the same budget level. For brands where first impressions drive conversions, this matters.

Speed to Launch

A competent Framer designer can go from blank canvas to published site in days, not weeks. The combination of the visual editor, pre-built components, and one-click publishing removes most of the friction in traditional web development. For startups launching MVPs or agencies running multiple client projects, this speed is a real competitive advantage.

Performance

Framer delivers static, pre-rendered pages via an edge CDN. Pages load fast by default. In our experience, Framer sites consistently score well on Core Web Vitals without the manual optimization that WordPress and Webflow often require. For SEO-conscious teams, this built-in performance baseline is valuable.

Animations and Interactions

Scroll-triggered animations, hover effects, page transitions, and micro-interactions are all achievable without code. Framer Motion, the underlying animation engine, is one of the most capable motion libraries available. The visual interface makes these accessible to designers who would otherwise need a developer.

AI Features

Framer now includes AI-powered tools for generating layouts, writing copy, creating vector graphics, and translating content into multiple languages. These are not gimmicks. The layout generation in particular saves meaningful time during the initial design phase.

Where Framer Falls Short

CMS Limitations

Framer's CMS is functional but basic compared to WordPress or even Webflow. You get collections, items, and references, but the relational capabilities are limited. If your site needs hundreds of collections, complex filtering, or advanced content modeling, you will hit walls.

The Scale plan caps at 20 CMS collections (expandable to 40 with add-ons) and 10,000 CMS items. For a marketing site with a blog, this is plenty. For a content-heavy directory or publication, it is not.

E-Commerce

Framer does not have native e-commerce. You can embed third-party checkout tools, but there is no built-in product catalog, cart, or inventory management. If selling products is your primary use case, Shopify or WooCommerce on WordPress are better choices.

SEO Control

Framer's SEO capabilities have improved significantly. You get custom meta titles, descriptions, Open Graph tags, sitemap generation, and structured data support. But you do not get the granular control that WordPress with a plugin like Yoast provides. Programmatic SEO at scale (thousands of auto-generated pages from CMS data) is possible but more limited than on WordPress or Webflow.

For a head-to-head comparison, see our Framer vs WordPress analysis.

Plugin Ecosystem

Framer's plugin marketplace is growing but nowhere near the depth of WordPress (60,000+ plugins) or even Webflow's integrations library. If you need a very specific third-party integration, check whether it exists in Framer's ecosystem before committing.

Learning Curve for Developers

Framer is designer-friendly, but developers used to writing code may find the visual-first approach frustrating initially. Code components exist for custom logic, but the workflow is different from traditional frontend development.

Who Should Use Framer

Startups launching marketing sites. If you need a polished, fast-loading site up in a week rather than a month, Framer is the best tool for the job. 40% of Y Combinator's latest batch chose Framer for their web presence. That is not a coincidence.

Agencies building client websites. The design quality you can achieve in Framer makes client presentations easier and revision cycles shorter. At Goodspeed, we use Framer for every marketing site we build. Our Framer development services page covers our approach.

Designers who want to ship without developers. If you can design in Figma, you can build in Framer. The learning curve from Figma to Framer is the shortest in the industry. Our learn Framer guide covers the path from beginner to production-ready.

Teams that care about performance. Framer's edge CDN delivery and static rendering mean fast sites out of the box. No caching plugins, no server optimization, no database tuning.

Who Should NOT Use Framer

Teams building e-commerce stores. No native cart, no product management, no checkout flow. Use Shopify or WooCommerce instead.

Content-heavy publications. If you need 50+ CMS collections, advanced taxonomy, editorial workflows, or thousands of auto-generated pages, WordPress is still the better platform.

Web applications. Framer builds websites, not web apps. If you need user authentication, databases, complex forms, or application logic, use Bubble or a custom-coded stack.

Teams locked into the Adobe ecosystem. If your entire workflow runs through Creative Cloud and you need tight integration with Photoshop, Illustrator, and After Effects, the context-switching to Framer may not be worth it.

How Framer Compares to Alternatives

Instead of rehashing surface-level comparisons, here are the three matchups that matter most, with links to our detailed analyses:

Framer vs Webflow: Framer wins on design speed and visual quality. Webflow wins on CMS depth and e-commerce. Read our full Framer vs Webflow comparison.

Framer vs Figma: Figma is for design. Framer is for design AND publishing. They are complementary, not competitors. Read our Framer vs Figma breakdown.

Framer vs WordPress: WordPress has more flexibility and a deeper plugin ecosystem. Framer has better out-of-the-box performance and a faster design workflow. Read our Framer vs WordPress analysis.

Build With Confidence

Framer has earned its place as one of the best website builders for teams that prioritize design quality and launch speed. It is not perfect. The CMS has limits, the plugin ecosystem is young, and it is not the right choice for e-commerce or web applications. But for marketing sites, landing pages, and brand-driven websites, nothing else delivers this combination of visual control and performance at this price.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Is Framer good for building websites in 2026?

Yes. Framer has evolved from a prototyping tool into a full website builder used by companies like Miro and Perplexity AI. It excels at marketing sites, landing pages, and portfolio sites where design quality and speed matter.

How much does Framer cost?

Framer offers a free plan for non-commercial use. Paid plans start at $10/month (Basic) billed annually, with Pro at $30/month and Scale at $100/month. Editor seats and locale add-ons are billed separately.

Is Framer better than Webflow?

It depends on your priorities. Framer offers faster design workflows and better visual control. Webflow has a more mature CMS and native e-commerce. For marketing sites, Framer often wins. For complex content sites, Webflow has advantages.

Can I use Framer for e-commerce?

Not natively. Framer lacks built-in product catalogs, carts, and checkout flows. You can embed third-party tools like Stripe or Gumroad, but Shopify or WooCommerce are better for dedicated online stores.

Is Framer good for SEO?

Framer supports custom meta tags, sitemaps, structured data, and delivers fast-loading static pages via a CDN. It handles SEO well for most sites, though WordPress with plugins offers more granular control for content-heavy sites.

Does Framer have a free plan?

Yes. The free plan lets you create unlimited projects on a Framer subdomain with Framer branding. It includes basic CMS, templates, and design tools. You need at least the Basic plan to connect a custom domain.

Is Framer hard to learn?

Framer is easier to learn than Webflow for designers, especially those familiar with Figma. The visual editor is intuitive for layout and styling. Code components require React knowledge, but most sites can be built entirely without code.

Can Framer replace WordPress?

For marketing sites, portfolios, and small business websites, yes. For blogs with complex taxonomies, membership sites, large directories, or sites that rely on specific WordPress plugins, WordPress is still the stronger option.
