I'm Harish Malhi, founder and CEO of Goodspeed Studio.  Goodspeed is a company that specializes in designing and developing websites using no-code tools like Bubble.io, Figma, and Framer. As a no-code enthusiast and entrepreneur, I'm passionate about empowering businesses with the tools they need to create amazing digital products without writing a single line of code.

One of the biggest challenges I faced when starting Goodspeed was getting press coverage. As a new startup, we didn't have the resources to hire a PR agency, and I didn't know where to begin. But I was determined to get our story out there, so I started doing my research and reaching out to journalists.

After a lot of hard work and persistence, I was thrilled to see our company featured on some of the biggest media outlets in the world, including Sky News, BBC, ITV, Financial Times, and Huffington Post. This press coverage has been instrumental in helping us grow our business and reach a wider audience.

In this blog post, I'm going to share five tips that I learned along the way to get press as a founder. These tips have worked for me, and I believe they can help you get your startup featured in the media as well.

Tip 1: Find the Journalists That Care About What You Care About

Every startup fits into a few themes. For Diaspo, our startup that focused on connecting older adults through food, cooking, culture, and entrepreneurship, my strategy was to go through all the big publications and find every journalist who spoke about one of these themes. I then figured out their email format and added them to my outreach list.

Tip 2: Tailor Your Email & Send It on Mon/Tues Afternoon to get Media coverage

Remember, getting press coverage is like sales. Every journalist is typically outspoken on Twitter, which gives you an opportunity to really understand what they care about and tie that to your prospect email.

Make your subject line as engaging as possible, and personalize it to the journalist. For example, one of the journalists I reached out to recently tweeted "What will I do when Masterchef ends?" So, my subject title was: "This Is What You Can Do When Masterchef Ends" since we were promoting our live cooking classes.

I also sent my emails on Monday or Tuesday afternoon, once journalists have caught up from the weekend and are searching for new stories.

Tip 3: Make It Easy for Journalists

Journalists are busy people, so make it easy for them to say yes to your story. Copy and paste the press release in the email so they have all the information they need right at their fingertips. Along with the press release, attach a few high-quality photos.

Again, it's like sales. Track your prospecting and chase them with value.

Tip 4: Be Ready for the Response

As soon as you get a response from a journalist, you want to be ready to jump on the opportunity. Make sure your schedule is free for follow-up questions, interviews, and anything else they might need.

Also, make sure your website is ready for the incoming traffic. Our website broke when we were featured on Sky News, and we missed a lot of signups.

When one media outlet sees you featured, it's likely that others will come soon after.

Tip 5: Understand What the Journalist Wants from the Startup Story

As a startup founder, you want to promote your brand and get signups. However, journalists don't want to run a direct advertisement.

It's important to understand the angle of the story and tailor your message accordingly. You can subtly promote your business while also building a relationship with the journalist.

Additional Tips

  • Build relationships with journalists: Get to know journalists who cover your industry. Follow them on social media, comment on their articles, and engage with them in conversations.

  • Be patient: It takes time to get press coverage. Don't get discouraged if you don't see results immediately. Keep reaching out to journalists and pitching your story.

  • Be helpful: Be a resource for journalists. If they have questions about your industry, be happy to provide them with information.

  • Be authentic: Be yourself and let your personality shine through in your interactions with journalists.

Getting press coverage can be a great way to grow your business and reach a wider audience. By following these tips, you can increase your chances of getting featured in the media.
