One designer is holding the brand while everything else queues. Here is how the three ways of buying design compare.
The three ways to buy website design
Most teams end up choosing between three models, often without realising they are choosing a model at all.
A website design subscription. A flat monthly fee for a queue of design requests, worked through one or a few at a time.
A fixed-price website. An agreed scope, an agreed price and a launch date, delivered as one project.
An embedded team. Designers and developers who work inside your team every month, on your site and brand, with no ticket queue in between.
None of them is better in general. Each one is built for a different kind of work, and most of the frustration I hear comes from buying the wrong model for the job.

What is a website design subscription and how does it work?
You pay a flat monthly fee, add requests to a board, and the provider works through them in order. Many services call this unlimited design, but unlimited usually means unlimited requests, not unlimited output at the same time. You can normally pause or cancel between months.
Subscription services such as DesignJoy or Superside suit teams with a steady flow of ads, decks and social assets. They are less suited to a full website with CMS, SEO and launch deadlines.
Where design subscriptions fall short for websites
A website is not a queue of separate tasks. The navigation, page templates, CMS, redirects, forms and analytics all depend on each other, and someone has to own how they fit together. A request queue is built to finish tickets, not to own a launch date.
The other gap is the build. Many subscriptions deliver designs, so you still need someone to build, test and launch the site. If that someone does not exist, the designs sit in a file.
When a fixed-price website works
When you need a full site live for a raise, launch or rebrand. The scope and price are agreed before work starts, paid half up front and half at launch, and you own everything at the end.
Fixed price also limits your risk. With us, a project can stop at a milestone: you pay for the work done and keep what has been delivered. After launch you get 30 days of cover for fixes. A Signature Site starts from $10,000, with most between $10,000 and $40,000, and goes live in 3 to 6 weeks. If you only need one page for a campaign, a Landing Page starts from $2,500 and goes live in about five working days.
When an embedded team works
When your site keeps changing: new product pages, campaigns and case studies every month. An embedded team learns your product, so you stop re-explaining context with every request.
We are Reka’s embedded design and development team. Their pages go live the day each model ships, and they shipped three pages in one week this way. With us, an embedded team starts from $2,000 a month and runs month to month.
What to look for in a design subscription or retainer
Does the fee include building and launching pages, or only design files?
How many requests are worked on at once, and how long does a typical page take?
Who owns the CMS, SEO setup and redirects when pages change?
Can you pause or cancel without losing access to the work?
Do you own the files, the site and the accounts outright?
If the answers are vague, the model is probably built for design tasks, not for running a website.
Which model fits your situation?
Start from what is about to happen, not from the pricing page. The trigger usually makes the choice for you.
A raise, launch or rebrand is on the calendar. You need a full site by a fixed date, so buy a fixed-price project with one owner for the launch.
The person who built the site has moved on. A freelancer left or the in-house owner changed roles, and nobody can take the site forward. Get it rebuilt or stabilised first, then decide whether you need monthly help.
Marketing needs ads, decks and social assets every week. That is queue work, and a design subscription is built for it.
You ship new product, pages or campaigns every month. The site is never finished, so an embedded team that already knows the product will move faster than any queue.
You have a site that is nearly right. A Tune-Up fixes it in two weeks for a fixed $5,000, without committing to a monthly plan.
Combining them
Many teams launch with a fixed-price Signature Site, then keep an embedded team on for the monthly work. The launch gets one owner and one date, and the site keeps improving after it.
