A website redesign is a substantial rework of a website's structure, design, messaging and often its underlying platform, done so the site reflects where the company is now. It goes beyond a refresh of colors or images, and usually covers navigation, page templates, copy and how the team updates the site.
Why It Matters for Your Website
Companies tend to outgrow their sites quietly. The site that worked at seed often undersells a company after a Series A or B. The first sign is usually not traffic. It is a founder hesitating to send the link to an investor, or sales explaining what the homepage gets wrong. When funding news, a launch or a press cycle is about to send people to the site, that gap becomes visible.
A redesign is also a chance to fix who controls the site. If every change needs a developer or a freelancer who has moved on, the new site should leave your team able to publish on its own.
It also helps to be honest about scope. Not every problem needs a full redesign. If the structure and messaging still work and the issues are speed, broken pages or a few weak sections, an audit and targeted fixes may be enough. If the site no longer tells the right story, or nobody on the team can safely change it, a redesign is usually the better investment. A redesign is also the point where you decide whether to stay on your current platform or migrate, which adds risk and needs its own plan.
What Good Looks Like
A clear reason and a fixed moment it has to be ready for, such as a raise, launch or rebrand.
Messaging agreed before visual design starts, so pages are designed around what you need to say.
A reusable component system, so new pages do not need a fresh design each time.
A redirect plan for every URL that changes, checked before launch, to reduce the risk of losing search traffic.
Analytics, forms and integrations tested end to end before the old site is switched off.
Your team trained and able to edit the site the week it goes live.
Questions to Ask an Agency
What will be live on our launch date, and what comes after?
Who writes the copy, and when is it signed off?
How do you protect our existing search traffic through the change?
What can our team change on its own after handover?
Can we see a recent site you built for a company at our stage?
How Goodspeed Handles It
Our Signature Site redesign runs from strategy and messaging through design, build and handover, typically over 3 to 6 weeks and starting from $10,000. We build in Framer so your team can publish without us. For Wisk, a Boeing-backed aircraft company whose old site did not match the weight of the business, we designed and built a new site in two months, and it was nominated for a Webby Award for Best Business Website. If you are not sure a full redesign is needed yet, start with an audit and decide from there.
