Stuart and Oliver had seen the same problem from the inside. Pension funds and institutional investors holding private equity, real estate and infrastructure assets had no good way to sell them. The secondary market existed in theory, and in practice it meant phone calls, informal networks and deals moving at the speed of the slowest participant. MeltX was their answer, and they needed a team who could build it.
The Process
MeltX's customers were looking for certainty: a pension trustee needed to know exactly who could see a listing, which buyers were approved, and what happened next. So MeltX had to be more than a marketplace. It had to be infrastructure that institutional investors would trust with real capital. The platform went live for its first auction, and the technology worked, while the back-office was still manual, chasing documents and working through buyer approvals by hand. We had been on weekly calls from the start, so we understood why those processes existed and what would fix them. The answer was to give fund managers their own secure, invite-only space to manage listings, upload documents and review buyers, with automated workflows, escalation logic and audit trails built in the order that let each piece extend the next.
The Result
MeltX now runs quarterly auctions for institutional buyers, sellers and advisers across multiple jurisdictions, with more than $2B in funds listed and deals ranging from £1m to £200m and beyond. The platform is FCA-regulated and SEC-registered, and was named the UK's Best Institutional Investment FinTech Platform. Over a year on from the first build, we are still the team behind it, growing it auction by auction.
